EVERYDAY STORIES

The call that rushes you

A voice insists that you act right away. Before you answer, take a moment to recognize what is really going on.

A phone on a kitchen table: an unexpected call has just come in

01

The scene

The phone rings. Someone says they work for an official office — the government, a service you've heard of. They talk fast. "You need to act right now, or there will be consequences." Your heart speeds up. Part of you just wants the pressure to stop.

02

In the room

In the workshop, young actors play out the call while older adults watch from their seats. You can feel the room tighten — the urgency, the fear. Then we pause. Nobody is blamed. We look at what just happened together.

03

The right habits

  1. 01

    Pause

You are allowed to hang up. No one has the right to keep you on the line.

  2. 02

    Check

Call back on your own — using the number on your bill, your card, or the official website you already know.

  3. 03

    Talk it over

A neighbour, a family member, someone at the bank you trust: another person often helps you see clearly.

Keep these in mind

  • Pause.
  • Check.
  • Talk it over.

04

Same scene, different ending

People remember the pushy voice and the knot in their stomach — and then the relief when we replay the same scene with the right moves. That contrast stays.

Anyone can get one of these calls. It has nothing to do with age or smarts. What matters is practising the right reflexes.
